Warning: this blog post may contain a small amount of cynicism.

Ah Twitter. What a bizarre world the Twitterers, Tweeters and Twits (that’s what I call them) live in.

Orchid Box noticed this morning that the top Twitter Trending Topics was the rather strange #unfollowdiddy. We did some expert research into the trend using Reverend Google to establish the roots of this Twitter keyword and P Diddy’s involvement in such. Our research uncovered the following:

Mr Diddy was obviously very happy at gaining 1,000,000 users on his Twitter site, because clearly that means he is the most popular person in the world ever, and possibly milked the glory a little to much with some intriguingly worded Tweets:

p diddy takes the plaudits

Aside from a myriad of exclamation marks and a unique interpretation of capital letters, Diddy was quite obviously a happy man. His Youtube monologue and threats to lock everyone in (we're not quite sure where exactly) tells us such. But who can blame him? He’s obviously a very popular Twit. I’m not sure I quite believe the popularity rankings in Twitter – something tells me Ashton Kutcher, P Diddy and Jonathan Ross are not necessarily the world’s favourite people - but 1,000,000 Tweetciples sure is a significant number of adoring fans.

But alas! Twitterers are not happy as Puff the Magic Rapper had done this without following any of his users back...shocking I know.

So just as he starts to enjoy the glory aboard his private jet with his champagne and dollar bill toilet paper savouring his greatest moment in life, it may be snatched away from his hands. Lots of Twits on Twitter have decided to start an un-follow campaign, sending the un-follow keyword #unfollowdiddy blazing to the top of the trending charts. Whether the masses can have their word (for let’s be honest, most of those trenders probably weren’t following Diddy anyway) remains to be seen, but it’s always nice to see those at the top get their comeuppance. Maybe that's where socialism went wrong?

There's a lesson to be learnt here though. Whether you're an SEO specialist, a new poster in the blogosphere, or a multi-platinum selling rap artists - share the Twitter love.

What will happen to the Twit Legend that is Sean Combs? Diddy do enough (get it?) in creating a reverse trend (#luvfollowingdiddy - ingenious) to hold the Twitter siege back?  Or will the tides of change take over and confine him to a mere 999,999 followers?

Orchid Box will keep you updated on the latest gripping developments...
